We are writing this article to clarify the confusion that has always existed about the breed, we say this because we are increasingly convinced that this confusion is wanted by the clubs that today want to operate with the exclusive interest of Dog Show and sale of Pedigree certificates to the mass of people who willingly rely on word of mouth from those who have margins of profit and notoriety on this business.
You all know that the American Pit Bull Terrier is a breed recognized in the world, often called APBT, or more simply Pit Bull, it is even recognized by the national canine registry that transcribes it in its register by officially assigning the breed to it on the only national identification number that has legal value, precisely the Microchip with its registration is also recalled through various legal sentences as such and in many news stories.
Some will try to pass on many messages that they want to understand it as NOT A BREED because it is not recognized as such by the FCI, which we remember does not hold the standard as it has chosen not to recognize it, but how many people know what the FCI is? How many are aware of the fact that the FCI itself is registered in Belgium as a non-profit association? and here in Italy it has no type of public registration other than a contractual agreement with another private association called ENCI.
but let’s go further, and let’s briefly outline the crux of the matter, the American Pit Bull Terrier is defined as a purebred dog for the very first time in the USA by the UKC association, which internally registers a well-defined standard, subsequently another association outlines what the phenotypic traits are according to its canons, we are talking about the ADBA, also based in the USA.
then many associations were born but none of them had the ardor to really express their thoughts, they limited themselves to being small satellites never recognized by the UKC and ADBA associations.
in order to make money through Dog Shows and the release of internal Pedigree certificates not recognized obviously by the UKC and ADBA themselves, they fattened their pockets by speaking of the breed as two types, namely the Pit Bull UKC and the Pit Bull ADBA, and for years this has been a real obfuscation of the truth in favor of the same operators in the sector who have limited themselves to confusing the thoughts of the masses with micro media wars between them.
Below you will find the standard registered in over 40 countries in the world including Italy for the American Pit Bull Terrier BREED, which clearly defines the breed and its variants within it as it has been worked on for years by thousands of breeders, the key point is the following:
Very often you hear people talking about Pit Bull UKC or ADBA, so it should be our right to follow their steps and call it Pit Bull WDF don’t you think? but it would be ethically wrong and culturally damaging, so the International Standards Commission has decided to make everyone understand through a cultural campaign for true enthusiasts of the breed, you cannot call a breed by giving the acronym of the phenotypic club to which it belongs based on where the dog is registered or based on which club has issued a phenotypic detail in writing.
The APBT is one and will remain one forever, wouldn’t it seem strange to you if we all started calling the American Staffordshire Terrier the Amstaff AKC and the Amstaff FCI? the speech seems strange but it is very equivalent, in fact other breeds like the American Bully are differentiated by Variety and not by club acronyms even though there are many, there are the standards, the classics, the Pockets, the XLs, the exotics and therefore it is not understandable for all of us to do differently for the APBT, that’s why in this standard with phenotypic description the acronyms are mentioned as a sense of cultural belonging but the variants are differentiated for what is their actual attitude.
We advise you to give it a read to understand the issue thoroughly and it will not be difficult to immediately understand that in the end reason often finds its place in logic.
The WDF has chosen three substantial morphological varieties for this breed, two that differ in functionality and physical structures and one that expands to exotic colorations. You will find the meaning in the selection of subjects in the Standard Variety, the one you all know as UKC, or for those who appreciate working or sporting subjects you will find your space in selecting the Sport and Work Variety, while for those who want to range in colorations without precluding the historical contribution of morphology they will be able to find a home in the selection of the Exotic Variety, composed of those colorations that expand the genetic variability in colors such as Blue, Black and Tan, Lilac, and all the various shades to end in Merle.
We started years ago to expand through scientific studies and color tests supported by targeted selection projects these colors finding today a concrete uniformity in their morpho-functionality and character, this can be liked or not liked that’s why there are three varieties so that they can be inserted into their own scheme without entering the others, but we are convinced that the greatest damage always remains the hypocrisy in not wanting to accept that these varieties exist and that they are now within the breed in a genetic way, and therefore putting your head in the sand would only lead to not protecting the genetic heritage of the breed itself that for many years has been left in the lurch of a carelessness of the problems and genetic defects often hidden in order to cope with earnings that over the years have been seen less and less affluent.
Now we invite you to a deep and careful reflection:
How many owners of the aforementioned breed are there today who say they have an APBT UKC and the latter does not even have a UKC Pedigree?
How many owners of an APBT that according to some niche clubs of the breed are awarded a title with the wording APBT UKC and this is not even registered in UKC?
How many do the same for the ADBA?
So the breed is often spoken of as UKC or ADBA but it does not have a pedigree from these associations, don’t you find all this strange? or convenient at the same time for those who want to instill a distorted truth in you?
Our task is to create culture and protect the breed, we apologize if in some way you will come out of this article hurt or offended it is not our intention but know that at least you will have read objective things and not personal opinions of a third party.
