How a WDF Dog Show Works
An interactive institutional guide to registration classes, ring entry, judging procedures, comparative contests, Best in Show selections and the final Best Breed Representative competition.
Dog Show Procedure
Choose the correct competition class
Dogs are entered according to age, qualifications, working status or championship status. Use the pathway filters to review the classes described in the WDF show scheme.
Baby
3 to 6 monthsIntroductory age class for the youngest registered dogs.
Puppy
6 to 9 monthsSecond introductory class before entry into the junior pathway.
Very Young
9 to 12 monthsFirst class contributing to the junior championship pathway.
Young
12 to 18 monthsJunior age class leading toward the Best of Junior Breed selection.
Intermediate
15 to 24 monthsAdult division class evaluated before the Open and Work class comparisons.
Open
Over 18 monthsAdult class for eligible dogs above the stated minimum age.
Work
With working patentClass reserved for dogs entered with the required working qualification.
Winner
At least 4 aptitude certificatesQualification class based on the aptitude certificates described in the scheme.
Champion
National Champion titleClass for dogs entered with a recognised national champion title.

A precise and repeatable order
The sequence is designed to keep each class organised and to preserve the same progression from the first class comparisons through the Best in Show contests.
- Sex order: each class enters with males first and females afterwards.
- Age progression: classes proceed in increasing age order, from Baby through Veteran.
- Best in Show order: the same class sequence is maintained during the final comparisons.
- Comparative contests first: comparative selections take place before the Best in Show contests.

What happens inside the show ring
The handler presents the dog calmly, follows the directions of the judge or ring secretary, permits the dental examination and holds the dog in a suitable pose for evaluation.
From class winners to Best in Show

Puppies Contest
Baby and Puppy classes progress through their sex and age comparisons.
Placements and comparative order
The scheme illustrates ranked placements from first through fifth. Class and breed-level comparisons are completed before the relevant Best in Show stage.
Best Breed Representative — BBR
The final breed representative is selected through the comparison of the Best of Breed representatives from the Junior, Adult and Champion divisions.

Which dogs enter first in each class?
Males enter first, followed by females, according to the order shown in the source scheme.
How are the classes ordered?
The sequence progresses by age and category, beginning with Baby and continuing through Puppy, junior classes, adult classes, champion classes and Veteran.

The handler enters calmly, keeps the dog on the left, follows the judge or secretary, permits the dental examination and presents the dog in a pose suitable for evaluation.
